Embarking on archive research for the first time can be confusing, disheartening and most of all time consuming. For researchers who are not experienced in locating and interpreting archive documentation, the result is often the inability to access vital evidence or to decipher the material correctly once found.

Sticks Research Agency offers guidance on how to approach such specialist research. We provide seminars that cover everything from preparing for your first archive visit to interpreting the evidence that you find. Please see below for an outline of the course we provide.

  • Rules and Regulations: document handling.
  • Research Techniques: planning research time, catalogues and archive references, onsite help, reading documents, interpreting documents and potential problems.
  • On-line Archival Research: pre-research online, electronic catalogues, online catalogue searches, articles and publications and the dangers of internet laziness.
  • Guided visits to The National Archives (Public Records Office) can also be booked.
